A DAY OF TERROR : SEPT 11 2001

IMAGE SEQUENCE OF UNITED FLIGHTS 175 IMPACTING TWO WORLD TRADE
CENTRE

The September 11 attacks (often referred to as 9/11) were a series of coordinated suicide attacks by al-Qaeda upon the United States on September 11, 2001. On that morning, terrorists affiliated with al-Qaeda hijacked four commercial passenger jet airliners. The hijackers intentionally crashed two of the airliners into the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in New York City, killing everyone on board and many others working in the building, causing both buildings to collapse within two hours, destroying at least two nearby buildings and damaging others.

The hijackers crashed a third airliner into the Pentagon. The fourth plane crashed into a field near Shanks ville in rural Somerset County, Pennsylvania, after passengers and members of the flight crew on the fourth aircraft attempted to retake control of their plane, which was heading for Washington, D.C. There are no known survivors from any of the flights.

Excluding the 19 hijackers, 2,974 people died in the attacks. Another 24 are missing and presumed dead. The overwhelming majority of casualties were civilians, including nationals of over 90 different countries. In addition, the death of at least one person from lung disease was ruled by a medical examiner to be a result of exposure to dust from the World Trade Center's collapse, as rescue and recovery workers were exposed to airborne contaminants following the buildings' collapse.

TWIN TOWER OF THE WORLD TRADE CENTRE BURNING

The United States responded to the attacks by declaring a War on Terrorism, launching an invasion of Afghanistan to depose the Taliban, who had harbored al-Qaeda terrorists, and enacting the USA PATRIOT Act. Many other nations also strengthened their anti-terrorism legislation and expanded law enforcement powers. Stock exchanges closed for almost a week, and posted enormous losses upon reopening, especially in the airline and insurance industries. The economy of Lower Manhattan ground to a halt, as billions of dollars in office space was damaged or destroyed.

The damage to the Pentagon was cleared and repaired within a year, and a small memorial was built on the site. Rebuilding the World Trade Center site has proven more difficult, with controversy over possible designs as well as the pace of construction. The selection of the Freedom Tower for the site has drawn extensive criticism, forcing the abandonment of some parts of the project.

Malaysians proud of Adelina Raisa Sufian

ADELINA (LEFT) POSING WITH HER FRIENDS AFTER SHE WON THE WESTLIFE TRUST PRIZE AT THE UNIVERSITY OF LONDON RECENTLY

A 21-year-old has done Malaysia proud when she was adjudged top student in English at the University of London’s Queen Mary College recently. Adelina Raisa Sufian, who obtained a Bachelor of Arts (English) degree with first class honours, won the coveted 2009 Westfield Trust Prize for outstanding academic achievement in English at the university last month.

Commenting on her achievement, Adelina attributed her success to encouragement from her parents, businessman Datuk Sufian Majid and Datin Alissa Fitri. Adelina, who is also an accomplished pianist, has represented Queen Mary College in choir and mathematics competitions. While pursuing higher education at the Ockham School, Britain, in 2004, she won the Headmaster’s Prize and was adjudged top student in Mathematics, English and Chemistry.

“I set a target throughout my study,” she said. “Most importantly, we must have the determination and confidence to succeed. “I am glad that I was able to compete with native speakers of English, as well as students from other countries,” Adelina added.

On her future, Adelina said she planned to write, pursue a Master’s degree and work in Malaysia. “I love my country,” she added. This young girl made our nation proud and determines to contribute to Malaysia after finish her study. This is one of the best examples to show our patriotism. Hope other students that studying in international universities emulate Adelina’s step in contributing to Malaysia after complete their studies.

Minta maaf jika saya menyinggung perasaan mana-mana pihak.

Uthaya is just another hypocrite!

After few months promising that he will not organise any street protest. Read here- Hindraf's Uthayakumar: No more street protests- Yesterday night he organised another protest to show his dissatisfaction. In fact, race based street protest will only increase the racial tensions in our nation. I know that the candlelight vigil was a cheap publicity for his new race based party, Human Rights Party (HRP).

Mr Uthaya, where is your ‘landmark plan’ that you said you have been created in your detention in ISA? Is it another lips service like MIC? Why you people never change? Please don’t cheat the Malaysian Indian anymore. You race based party is not relevant for multiracial Malaysia and definitely your cheap publicities never work!
