Three-Cornered Fight in Kuala Terengganu

Mohd Abdul Wahid Endut (PAS), Datuk Wan Ahmad Farid (BN) and Azharudin Mamat @ Adam (BEBAS)

Barisan candidate Datuk Wan Ahmad Farid Wan Salleh filed his papers at 9.13am on Tuesday, followed by PAS’ Mohd Abdul Wahid Endut five minutes later. Surprise independent candidate Azharuddin Mamat @ Adam handed in his papers two minutes before the end of the nomination period. So the Kuala Terengganu by-election on Jan 17 will see a three-cornered tussle between Barisan Nasional, PAS and an independent candidate.

Kuala Terengganu constituency has 80 229 registered voters. Racial breakdown with 88.2% Malay, 10.9% Chinese, 0.6% Indians and 0.2% others will vote together to choose their favourite rep for parliament. Election Commission announced the date of a by-election on December 5, which was called after UMNO MP Datuk Razali Ismail died last month.

This undoubtedly will become another great contest election in the Malaysia’s politics history. The moment will soon change the politics agenda of our country once again, more like a new revolution in the political agendas in our country. This is the second election after March 8 General Election. This by-election will reflect the believes of Malay voters towards the party politics whether BN or PR.

Will this by-election turned to be a “mini tsunami” after the “huge tsunami” that happened in March 8 2008 which resulted the won of 5 states and denial of 2/3 BN’s majotity in parliament by Pakatan Rakyat? Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Najib Tun Razak stated that Permatang pauh is 'do or die' battle for them, they are confident that will retain the seat. Hope clean tactics used by the party politics that contesting in the election in order to respect people's rights to vote and protect the democracy system in Malaysia.
