Limitation of 10 subjects in SPM is a wise move

The Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM), or the Malaysian Certificate of Education, is a national examination taken by all fifth form students in Malaysia. Its well known as nation’s most important exam when it determine Malaysian students future in looking for jobs or securing a place for the next stage of education for example Pre-U, matriculation and college and etc.

Malaysian Examinations Syndicate (Lembaga Peperiksaan Malaysia) and Education Ministry limited 21 subjects for the students in SPM examination, but now after the PSD scholarships issue brought up, government wants to decrease the subjects in SPM. We can’t deny the fact that, since government allocated a certain amount of scholarships to Malay students, non-Malay students pressured to take as many subjects as possible to compete for a small part that ‘threw’ to them. Yes, the more 1As you get the brighter chance for you to be awarded scholarships by government. No wonder why students are taking many subjects in SPM.

I welcome the cabinet decision to limit the number of subjects to be taken in SPM. At the same time quota system should be abolished, merit system should to be practiced at the first place. Education Ministry must transparent in this issue, not bias to certain race or religion. All 10 1As scores must be published in local dailies to tell the public number of students eligible to get PSD scholarships.

Besides that, 10 subjects limitation will help student to focus on their major field. Science stream students only focus on their subjects, the same situation to Arts stream, Sports Science, Technical studies, foreign languages, Information and Communication Technology, Religious study and much more. Let them emphasis on their favourite field in order to deliver best performance. Our nation surely benefits a lot if such exam rules carried out, we can produce more experts and professionals in various sectors.

It a wise move by the Cabinet to limit SPM subjects to 10. Lets join hand to support this excellent cause for a better Malaysia!

ya i support it........... 10 subjects enough to help the students focus on their major field. Other than that, the teachers will be able to focus on the core subjects and they will also become more specialised.Parents would also be able to save on the cost of sending their children for tuition for the additional subjects.

Ya Vasan...I support this move too.

But at the same time, to make this more effective, I feel the government should increase marking grade standards as well.

If subjects limited, but an A is still around 60% or less, what's the point ?

We're still going to get thousands of straight As students & limited scholarships. The problem cycle will still repeat.

I hope the government realizes this & do something about it.

bro Satish,
On the grading system, A+, A and A- will be introduced instead of the 1A, B and C system. However, it remains yet a mystery how the new grading system will work better over the current one

lets be rational....

What the need taking so many subjects?

One only needs to take subjects which are relevant to his future course or profession

I do also support the move by the Education Dept. But then there is something that they should take note at. Currently for Science student like me, we only have 9 basic subject that we can take, the previous batch was with their 10 basic subject. The subject that have been reduce this year was English For Science & Technology. Well, the other 9 subject that are basic for now is,BM,BI,Sejarah,Bio,Chemis,Physics,Moral,Maths & Add Maths.
So lets say I want to be a doctor, I only will be taking this 9 subjects, you can say that I can take addition subject such as Akauns and so on...but do I really need that subject for my doctor field?? So somehow the policy is affecting some students which are really good. So the Education Dept should look into this matter thus enabling PSD scholarship to be given to the candidate arcording to their archivement not the amount of A's.

Sungguh menyedihkan.

Sekadar pandangan seorang bakal pendidik dari London.

just think of Chinese Mandarin subject, and Malay's Agama...

but u r true... may be the government should set like this..

10+1/10+2.. but the two extra subjects doesn't need to be included in the overall result...
